Investment rationale
Public transport plays an important role in reducing CO2 emissions. High-speed trains are a sustainable alternative to the use of airplanes on distances up to 1,000 km. Therefore, East Japan Railway plays an important role in the daily life for people living in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area by offering an efficient and extensive railway network of more than 7.500km including commuter lines, high-speed Shinkansen lines, and regional lines. Because of such network, East Japan Railway also contributes to compact urban development. JR East operates multiple tourist-oriented trains such as the Japan Rail Pass, which encourages visitors to use more environmentally friendly transport and support the regional economy. JR East continues to increase the percentage of renewable energy in its operation by installing solar panels and participating in solar and wind power parks.
