Mark is currently the Chief Operating Officer at Triodos, having joined the bank in early 2024. His appointment is subject to formal approval by the regulators and it is anticipated he will start in early summer. He will succeed Dr Bevis Watts, who announced last October that he would step down after nearly 10 years at the helm.

Gary Page, Chair of Triodos Bank UK, recently re-appointed as chair for a final term of three years, said: “It was crucial for us to find a new CEO with the right values and passion for ethical and sustainable banking, as well as a strong understanding of our customers and a rapidly changing banking landscape. Mark has made a really positive impact since joining Triodos and we are confident he is the right person to lead the bank forward and deliver the impact we want to have. My thanks go to Bevis for his contribution over many years and for his commitment to assist in the smooth transition over the coming months. We wish him well for the future.”

Mark brings with him a wealth of experience, having previously served as COO at Unity Trust Bank, another member of the Global Alliance for Banking on Values (GABV). He moved away from mainstream banking to focus on roles in values-based organisations. Previously Mark had a 23-year career at HSBC, where he held various senior roles and led large teams within the retail banking division. He studied banking, insurance and finance at Bangor University.

Speaking about his appointment, Mark Clayton said: "I am excited for the opportunities ahead at Triodos Bank UK. We have an excellent leadership team in place working to deliver on our mission of making money work for positive change in society. I am driven by a strong desire to protect the world around us and create a society that values dignity for all, empowerment and strong communities – and hugely honoured to be given the opportunity to do so at Triodos."

Triodos Bank UK, a certified B Corporation, has over 300 staff based in Bristol headquarters, and offices in London and Edinburgh. With a balance sheet of approximately £2 billion, the bank is well-known for financing UK pioneers in sustainability that are driving the transitions required in energy, food, resource use, wellbeing and society. Triodos is recognised as the UK's No.1 ethical bank by Ethical Consumer for its market-leading transparency and positive investment strategy.

Triodos Bank UK Limited has a full banking licence and is regulated by the PRA and FCA. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Triodos Bank N.V. (incorporated in the Netherlands).

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Triodos Bank UK – one of only three banks to hold the Which? Eco Provider accreditation. Mark's appointment comes at a time of great opportunity and growth for Triodos Bank. His experience and dedication to values-driven banking will ensure that Triodos continues to lead the way in sustainable finance.
