What is the Future Generations Fund?
Launched in the UK earlier this year, the Triodos Future Generations Fund empowers everyday investors to make a difference in children’s lives. Managed by Triodos Investment Management, the fund focuses on investments that promote child welfare and safety.
The fund is aligned with Triodos Bank’s five key transition themes:energy, food, resources, societal, and wellbeing, and was inspired by UNICEF’s vision for a child-focused investment strategy.
It includes pioneering investments such as:
- OrthoPediatrics: The first company to produce orthopedic devices specifically for children.
- SOBI (Swedish Orphan Biovitrum AB): A biopharmaceutical company combating RSV, a virus that disproportionately affects young children.
By targeting child-centered innovations, the fund reflects Triodos’ mission to create meaningful impact through sustainable finance.
Transforming plastic into possibilities
At the heart of this collaboration is UNICEF’s Building Bricks for the Future project in Côte d’Ivoire, an innovative initiative that turns plastic waste into durable building blocks for constructing schools.
The project’s ripple effects are remarkable:
- Education access: 427 classrooms built since 2019, benefiting over 21,000 children.
- Women empowerment: 288 women employed to collect plastic, receiving medical insurance and professional training.
- Environmental impact: Over 3,195 tonnes of plastic recycled, reducing waste while building brighter futures.
Each classroom not only provides a safe learning space but is also equipped with clean water, sanitation facilities, and environmental awareness resources, ensuring a holistic learning environment.
Investing with a child lens
UNICEF’s Executive Director, Sandra Visscher, explains: "Investing with a child lens means aligning capital with the rights, needs, and well-being of children. These investments yield sustainable benefits for communities and future generations.”
The Triodos Future Generations Fund embodies this philosophy by donating 0.10% of its net asset value annually to the project. This flexible funding ensures essential needs—like repairing roofs—are met, making a tangible difference where it’s needed most.
A brighter future for Côte d’Ivoire
With UNICEF’s support and the flexibility of the fund’s contributions, the project aims to fill the gap of 30,000 classrooms by 2025, providing quality education for all children in Côte d’Ivoire.
The impact stretches beyond infrastructure:
- 45,000+ teachers trained, reaching over 2.5 million students annually.
- 176,000+ school kits distributed, enhancing learning experiences.
- 7,700+ environmental awareness boxes provided, fostering sustainable practices from an early age.
Why it matters
By supporting UNICEF’s innovative solutions, the Triodos Future Generations Fund exemplifies how impact investments can drive real, measurable change. Together, we’re not just investing in schools or children—we’re investing in a more equitable and sustainable future.
