History
Triodos Renewables is an initiative of Triodos Bank NV. Founded in 1980 in The Netherlands, Triodos has pioneered the finance of social and environmental initiatives.
It is a fully independent and fully licensed bank, owned by public shareholders. Today, Triodos Bank has offices in the UK, Belgium, The Netherlands, Spain and an agency in Germany. The Bank also lends in Ireland and France. UK activities are based in Triodos’ Bristol office.
Triodos Bank’s international impact is global and growing. Its activities include management of a range of renewable energy, venture capital and ethical investment funds, research and advisory services, and international development funds working with a number of microfinance and fair trade organisations in developing countries.
The Triodos Group – an unrivalled track record in renewable energy
The Triodos Group has been at the forefront of renewable energy finance in Europe since the early 1980s. The key milestones in its renewable energy history follow:
1986 – Following the Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster, Triodos Ventures is launched to help finance the development of wind energy projects.
1988 – The first wind farms are built as a result of investment by Triodos Ventures.
1990 – Triodos Bank launches the first Dutch green investment fund.
1992 – First wind loan (Haverigg I) by Mercury Provident and Triodos Bank (Mercury Provident was an independent bank in the UK that merged with Triodos Bank in 1995).
1995 – Launch and first share issue for The Wind Fund plc (the original name for Triodos Renewables).
1997 - Triodos Solar Investment Fund for developing countries is launched.
1998 – Second Share issue of The Wind Fund.
1998 – The Wind Fund completes investments in Haverigg II (2.4MW) and Beochlich hydro electric scheme (1MW).
2001 – Solar Development Group for developing countries is launched in collaboration with the IFC and World Bank.
2004 – Triodos Renewables complete investment in E-Concern BV.
2005 – Triodos Group hits the £150 million mark for wind energy project finance.
2005 – Launch of Triodos Renewables third share issue.
2005 - Triodos Renewables acquirers 'Gulliver' at Ness Point in Lowestoft.
2006 - Triodos Renewables announces the launch of Connective Energy, a joint venture with The Carbon Trust and Mitsui Babcock.
2006 – Aquisition of the Caton Moor and Sigurd wind farms, with a combined capacity of 17.3 MW.
2007 - Investment in Marine Current Turbines Ltd.
2008 - Triodos Renewables fourth share issue.
